Steps to Earning a Merit Badge
ALWAYS HAVE ANOTHER ADULT OR PARENT PRESENT WHEN YOU MEET OR CONTACT ANY SCOUT LEADER OR COUNSELOR
1. Decide on merit badge to work on. A list of all currently available Merit badges can be found here.
2. Look at the requirements by looking online or Obtain merit badge booklet, either from troop Librarian or by purchasing it at the council shop.
3. Read all the requirements thoroughly so you now what is expected of you
4 Meet or Call your Scoutmaster to discuss your selection and your ability to complete the requirements
5. Obtain a pre-signed merit badge blue card during your meeting with the scoutmaster or other arrangement (this can also be done online via Scoutbook).
6. Get name and contact information of a merit badge counselor for the merit badge you’re working on from the scoutmaster.
7. Make initial contact with the counselor and arrange for a meeting and completion of the requirements
8. If the meeting will be at the counselor’s house, bring a parent with you! (Youth protection must be followed)
9. Complete all merit badge the requirements. If you need additional meetings with your counselor, schedule them.
10. When all the requirements are completed, meet with the counselor one last time to have the card signed. The counselor will retain
1/3 of the blue card for his/her records. (This process can also be done electronically)
11. Return the remainder of the blue card to your Scoutmaster, who will sign it again, and keep part of it.
12. Hand or bring the card to the Advancement Chairperson (currently Ginny Westervelt).
13. Receive the merit badge patch and presentation card at an upcoming Court of Honor. Your part of the blue card should be returned to you also.
14. Put the presentation card and blue card in your "Scout Awards Binder" with all your other accomplishments
15. Sew the badge on your sash and show it off!
